This Winter, Generifus, the decades-running music project of Pacific Northwest stalwart Spencer Sult, returns with Pulling on the Seam, a new full-length album, via Los Angeles-based Anxiety Blanket Records (vinyl, digital) and Seattle’s Den Tapes (cassette). Across the record, Sult ventures down a path of new beginnings, choosing to sit with uncertainty rather than try to escape it. Recorded over two years, across three PNW studios, the album continues the tradition of carrying Generifus’ mossy log perspective to the wider world.

Writing for the album began around the summer of 2024 with a self-directed retreat at a riverfront vacation rental near Vernonia, Oregon. The process of invention and revision continued until just before the final recording sessions in January 2026. Pulling on the Seam continues Sult’s practice of pairing surreal imagery with seemingly mundane descriptions and details of daily life. However, while more recent albums featured prominent story songs and character studies, this new batch lives comfortably in the examination of emotional landscapes.

Olympia’s Earth to Emma, Woodinville’s Way Out, and the Unknown in Anacortes served as the venues for capturing the songs on this album. The Olympia-based Generifus live band members contributed to the bulk of the tracks, while two feature contributions from Seattle’s Cam Hancock (Coral Grief) on drums. A chance encounter with the Bellingham folk-rock troupe Lolo Wawa at a gig booked mid-recording led to the spontaneous addition of defining backing vocals and fiddle parts.

The result of these efforts is a dynamic and cohesive album that finds its comfortable place amongst change and restlessness, satisfied with answering no question with pure conviction. Pulling on the Seam offers new adventures and insights for returning Generifus listeners, and for the uninitiated, it offers a strong new voice amongst music’s current crop of earnest and sincere songwriting talents.
